NEW DELHI: India is set to inaugurate a huge new residential building complex in Kolkata’s main business district this year, with the state’s first residential development in a decade set to start this fall.

Located just south of the country’s capital, the massive complex will include 2,200 flats, 1,300 units of office space, more than 2,000 guesthouses, 1.2 million square feet of retail space and nearly 3,000 restaurants, said the State Planning Commission.

It will be built on the site of the former Tata Sons steel plant, which was converted into a residential complex in 2005 and was sold in the process.

The new development will also be the countrys first high-rise residential development, the commission said.
