By Alex KhrushchevThe Montreal Canadiens are the latest team to sign a big name free agent.

On Wednesday, the Montreal Canadiens announced that forward David Desharnais had signed a five-year contract extension.

He will be a restricted free agent this summer.

He had previously signed with the New York Rangers on a five year deal worth $20.5 million.

He will join an elite forward group that includes Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Patrick Kane.

Deshavais will likely be one of the top two or three players on that list.

The 24-year-old defenseman has been an absolute stud for the Canadiens this season.

His 15 goals and 42 points are tied for third in the league.

He is also one of just three players in the top-10 in points.

He has played with top-pairing linemates Alexei Emelin and Max Pacioretty.

DesHavais has been one of four Canadiens to record a point in every game this season and has six goals and 13 points in the past six games.

He also scored his first NHL goal in the first period against the Boston Bruins on Saturday.
